Launch Monitor Metrics, Explained

A launch monitor can report as few as 5 numbers per shot or as many as 50 — that is the recorded range across the 23 monitors in our database that publish a count. Every one of those numbers describes either the ball’s flight or the club’s delivery. This page defines each metric in plain language and, where our database records it, says how many units measure that metric directly rather than modeling it.
Data points
The advertised count of metrics a unit reports per shot. Among the monitors in our database that publish one, the count runs from 5 (pocket radars like the PRGR HS-130A and Shot Scope LM1) to 50 (the FlightScope X3C). A bigger number is not automatically better data: what matters is which metrics are measured rather than modeled, which is why we record the two lists separately on every spec page.
Ball speed
How fast the ball leaves the face, in miles per hour. The single biggest input to distance, and the most universally captured number in the category: all 37 monitors in our database with a recorded answer measure it directly.
Launch angle
The vertical angle of the ball’s takeoff relative to the ground. Measured directly by 32 of the 36 units with a recorded answer; the other 4 do not report it.
Spin rate
Total spin of the ball at launch, in revolutions per minute. Spin keeps the ball airborne and stops it on landing. It is also where the catalog splits: of the 35 monitors with a recorded spin-rate method, 24 measure it directly, 3 — including the Rapsodo MLM2PRO — measure it only with specially marked balls, 4 calculate it from other data, and 4 do not report it. Spin axis
The tilt of the ball’s spin, which determines curvature — a leaning axis is what makes a draw or a fade. The measured-versus-calculated split mirrors spin rate: 24 of the 37 units with a recorded answer measure it, and 8 don’t report it at all.
Carry vs total distance
Carry is how far the ball flies before landing; total adds the roll-out. Fitting decisions are made on carry. Worth knowing: only 6 of the 37 units with a recorded answer measure carry from tracked flight — the other 31 calculate it from launch conditions, which is one reason short indoor spaces produce different distance numbers than a range session.
Apex height
The peak height of the ball’s flight. Measured by 6 of the 35 units with a recorded answer and calculated by 24.
Descent angle
How steeply the ball comes down — it governs how quickly a shot stops. Mostly a modeled number: 18 of the 34 units with a recorded answer calculate it, and only 3 measure it.
Dispersion
How far offline shots finish, left or right of the target line. Reported as offline distance on spec pages.
Smash factor
Ball speed divided by club speed — a measure of strike efficiency. Because it is a ratio of two other numbers, nearly every unit derives it: 35 of the 36 monitors with a recorded answer list it as calculated.
Club head speed
How fast the club head is moving at impact, in miles per hour. Widely captured: 34 of the 36 units with a recorded answer measure it directly.
Attack angle
Whether the club is traveling up or down through impact, in degrees. This is where club data starts to thin out: 18 of the 35 units with a recorded answer measure it, and 14 do not report it.
Club path
The direction the club head is traveling through impact relative to the target line. Measured by 22 of the 36 units with a recorded answer; 11 do not report it.
Face angle
Where the club face points at impact relative to the target line — the dominant influence on the ball’s starting direction. Measured by 16 of the 36 units with a recorded answer; 17 do not report it.
Face to path
The difference between face angle and club path — the relationship that shapes curvature. Rare as a directly measured number: of the 23 units with a recorded answer, 4 measure it and 5 calculate it from the two underlying angles.
Dynamic loft
The loft actually delivered to the ball at impact, as opposed to the loft stamped on the club. Measured by 9 of the 30 units with a recorded answer.
Impact location
Where on the face the ball was struck. Only certain camera-equipped units can see it: 10 monitors in our database measure it, including the Foresight GCQuad, Trackman 4, and Uneekor EYE XO2.
