Golf Simulator Space Requirements

Whether a launch monitor works in your room comes down to three recorded numbers — how deep the room is, how high the ceiling is, and where the unit has to sit relative to the ball. Of the 39 monitors in our database, 23 publish at least one of those figures: behind-ball units that record both setback and ball flight need 10–16 ft of hitting depth from those two figures alone, recorded ceiling minimums run 9–10 ft, and the smallest recorded full room-depth spec is 12 ft, on the SkyTrak ST MAX. Radar and camera architectures answer the three questions very differently.
How much space do you need for a golf simulator?
It depends on where the monitor sits, which is the single most useful thing to learn before shopping. The 16 behind-ball units in our database (radar and radar-camera fusion) occupy depth on both sides of the ball: their recorded setback behind you plus their recorded ball flight in front. The 14 side-of-ball units (camera-based) read the ball from beside the mat, so the room only has to fit the swing and the net. The 7 overhead units bolt to the ceiling and free the floor entirely — at the price of a recorded ceiling minimum and a permanent install.
Here is every monitor we track that publishes at least one space figure, sorted by its smallest recorded depth requirement. “Depth from recorded figures” is setback plus minimum ball flight for units that publish both. A dash is an unpublished figure — we never fill it in:

Room depth
Depth is where radar and camera architectures split. A Doppler-radar unit watches the ball fly, so it needs flight to watch: the recorded room-depth picture for a behind-ball unit is setback behind the golfer plus ball flight to the net, before the net’s own standoff is counted. A photometric (camera) unit photographs the ball in the first moments after impact and computes the flight, which is why camera units dominate short rooms — several record no depth requirement beyond the swing itself.
6 monitors publish an explicit minimum room depth, running 12–16 ft. For the rest, the honest depth floor is the derived setback-plus-flight column in the table above — and where a unit publishes neither, the manufacturer has left the question unanswered and we leave it unanswered too. Ceiling height
7 monitors in our database publish a minimum ceiling height, and the recorded figures run 9–10 ft — all of them overhead-mounted or indoor sim units, where the sensor itself lives above the hitting zone. For every other monitor the ceiling constraint is not the sensor but the swing: clearance over your hands at the top of a driver swing, measured at the lowest obstruction in the room (joists, ducts, light fittings), decides whether the room works. That check costs nothing and fails faster than any spec: take a slow full swing where the mat will go.
Setback
Setback is where the unit sits relative to the ball, and it only consumes room depth for behind-ball placements. 15 monitors record a setback distance, running 3.5–8 ft behind the ball. Side-of-ball and overhead units record none — that is precisely their space advantage, and it is why the small-room shortlist below is dominated by camera units that sit beside the hitting zone or above it.
Ball flight
11 monitors record a minimum ball flight — the distance the ball must actually travel before the net or screen for the unit to report trustworthy numbers, running 6.5–10 ft. Radar needs flight because flight is what it measures; a camera unit’s picture is complete in the first feet, so most photometric units publish no flight requirement at all. When a behind-ball unit’s numbers look wrong in a short room, this figure is usually the reason.
Which monitors fit a small room?
Work the table above from the top: the smallest recorded depth requirements belong to side-of-ball photometric and fusion units, because removing the setback removes the largest hidden space cost. Behind-ball radar can still work — the compact end of the recorded setback-plus-flight range is modest — but every foot is accounted for, and the net still needs its own room. What ceiling height do you need for a golf simulator?
Enough for a full swing with your longest club plus the sensor's recorded minimum where one is published. The swing is the real constraint: take a slow practice swing with a driver under the lowest point of the ceiling — if your hands or clubhead feel close, the room fails before any spec sheet gets a say.
Can you fit a golf simulator in a garage?

Why do radar launch monitors need a deeper room?
A behind-ball radar unit sits its recorded setback distance behind the ball and then needs its recorded minimum ball flight in front of the ball before the net or screen. Both distances are in the room whether you planned for them or not — side-of-ball camera units avoid the setback entirely.
Do you need the manufacturer minimum or more?
The recorded figures are the manufacturer's minimums for the sensor to work, not a comfortable build. They exclude the net's own standoff, swing clearance behind you, and walking room — treat them as the floor a room must clear, then add margin.
